No problem! Setting this to resolved.
September 19, 2019 at 2:40 pm #300678The plugin “BBCode Deluxe” was the culprit for the stripping the paragraph breaks, even when a user did a double return. Deactivating returned the paragraph breaks.
The plugin was the attempt to add more formatting options and BBCode to the forums (See this thread).
Forum posts will now appear as they look when creating a post. If you single-return, then there won’t be a space between paragraphs. If you double-return, then there will be a line break between paragraphs.
Setting as resolved.
September 19, 2019 at 2:25 pm #300672The old FM forum did have different settings on some of the boards. Which were different from the old OLD FM forum.
In the old OLD FM forum most of the boards were visible only to those logged in. However, the main board and a few others were visible to browsers. I remember that because I read through those a little bit to see what kind of writing community this was before I registered and joined. I’d been burned before, and was gun-shy about joining a community blind. I quickly saw that FM was different. So, when I was initially setting the permissions to the various boards here I had that on my mind.
Currently all boards under the “Main Lobby” are visible and readable to everyone. This helps us not only with search engine rankings (as the bots are seeing that this place is active, therefore giving us a higher ranking), but mostly to give outsiders some sort of an idea of what we are all about.
The “Main Lobby” boards cannot be posted to anonymously. They are set to read-only to anyone not logged in. So, no need to worry about a huge problem with spam.
All other boards cannot be entered unless a person is registered and logged in. They can only see the title and description of the board. If they try to enter, they are redirected to the log-in page.
Anyone not logged in who tries to get into a topic from the “Recent Posts” page is also redirected.
I talked this over with Zette. We both agree that the other boards need to remain private to those who are registered and logged in. But it does benefit us to have the main board readable only. If anyone would like to talk about something more private we do have the other private boards.

September 19, 2019 at 1:40 pm #300663I signed up for a free account so I could poke around. Some of it looks really nifty! I was hoping it had a map-creating tool, as I can’t run Campaign Cartographer (would love to). But, alas, it does not. You create a map outside the site, then upload it. World Anvil then has a tool that can overlay pins and notes on top of it. But they are missing that primary tool of map creation itself. I would have considered using the site if it had that. Phooey.
September 19, 2019 at 12:50 pm #300662I wonder if this is the author and article Dean Wesley Smith alluded to in a recent blog post? He didn’t reveal the identity, but wow, it sure got him on a good rant. LOL 😛
September 19, 2019 at 11:58 am #300658Well, here we get to the issue of PHP version. I can expand the editor, or better, replace it. But it requires a newer PHP version. The new upgraded site will do just fine with the PHP upgrade, but the issue we saw on the old forum of no index will reappear. On the old site, unless a person has a bookmark to a specific topic, you will not be able to find it or get to it.
That said, this is what the site upgrade was all about. The need to upgrade not only the front-end, but also the back-end to make the site more secure, easier to use, and have the ability for better/easier upgrades in the future. I’ve imported all the old forum posts, user accounts, and such, so technically we don’t need it now.
So, question is, do we want to just go for it at this point and upgrade the PHP, even though it breaks the old forum software?
September 14, 2019 at 4:27 pm #300410Fixed!
I wonder just how long it’s had that typo, considering I imported it as-is from the old forums. 😛
September 11, 2019 at 9:28 pm #300071I went ahead and deleted the old page. 🙂
September 11, 2019 at 4:48 pm #300043Link in the header has been changed to the page that was once linked in the sidebar. Took that sidebar portion out and rearranged 3 widgets in a different order (also consolidated them).
Are you talking about the widget “Site Wide Activities [RSS]”? If so, it no longer reports forum activity. It does, however, list other activity including any updates to profiles, blog posts, updated profile activity of “What’s new, NAME”, and so forth. For those, yes, it does have snippets.
Do we have this resolved?
September 11, 2019 at 6:00 am #300037I forgot about the link in the header. Fortunately that is an easy fix. Took the ‘resolved’ off the post to remind me to work on it when I get home from work.
September 10, 2019 at 7:15 pm #299969Two months is too long for my life at the moment, but I would love to see the 1-month challenges come back!
September 10, 2019 at 3:10 pm #299926I changed out one of the widgets so I could fine-tune the access settings. The Forum Activity area now only shows the basic header information but does not include any snip from the posts.
The other widget I changed to exclude the forum but includes everything else. This way we still have plenty of activity updates on the right side of the site (which helps our Google rating).
Setting this as resolved unless another problem crops up.
September 10, 2019 at 3:05 pm #299924I now have all three put into the “Forward Motion” drop-down menu at the bottom: Login, Recover Password, Register
September 10, 2019 at 2:56 pm #299911Good point. Login moved up so it has a better chance of being above the fold. Now for the rest.
September 10, 2019 at 2:23 pm #299908Yep, the text was almost the same color as the background and so were invisible. I’ve now fixed the problem. 🙂
