Welcome to the site! I hope you find all your writing answers here, as well as connect with the fine members who enjoy discussing writing and helping others.

Important notice: We have just moved to this site as of October 12, 2012 and we are in the process of populating the boards again. Don’t be afraid to jump in, even if a board looks empty!

The most important thing you need to do right now is read the Terms of Service if you have not already. These are the rules the site lives by, and some of them may seem a bit odd to you — but FM has existed for over a decade with very little trouble because we focus on writing and leave a lot of the real-world troubles out of the site.

FM is open to anyone who wants to discuss writing and learn how to write better. We have sections on techniques, genres, different types of publishing and more.

Keep an eye on the announcements board to see what’s coming up for classes, challenges and more. We also have private critique rooms. Do not post material to be critiqued anywhere but in those sections. For more information, check out the Critique Connection Board. This is where you can connect with others to form private groups or ask to join the private Roving Crits board. (See Critique Connection for more information).

Welcome to the site! I hope you have fun!

:( :) Hi All, I have now probably foolishly given up a well paid teaching job to be a full time writer. I plan to publish 4 books within the year, which is doable, as I have written books under other names, and one of those will be revamped to be re-publish under my own name. I have turned down the offer of agents, which might not have been the best course of action, now that I am finding out how hard PR/marketing is! I am confident I will get there, but have realised that I may have to follow the bamboo rule and have to work part-time to achieve this. When I have spoken to famous writers recently, they have all said they have no idea how marketing works now, as someone else does all that for them… wouldn’t that be nice? Happy writing everyone, and remember: it is for the art not the money, the money is a bonus!

Hello to everyone, im a young lad who has just developed an interest in writing and have been looking for a site where people would be willing to help me review some of my currently unfinished work to tell me whether its a worthwhile idea. I will also be willing to help out anyone if I can however I’m no proof reader or good editor but I will do what I can if you would like me to. I don’t feel I have a very impressive writing style(and I didn’t do well in English GCSE) all I have is an idea and would appreciate any help if people are willing. Thank you :D

Hey! I’m Essy and I’m a creative writing major and history minor. My goal is at some point to publish a book through either self-publishing or traditional. I really started writing when I was a high school sophomore. I’ve traveled all over the US and Western Europe and have also been to Montreal, Canada nearly every year since I was twelve (I have cousins there). I’d really like to do more traveling and getting inspiration from other cultures.

                          Hi Bernardette. Welcome!

                          What to do?

Do you have a favorite Genre? If so write that down. It won’t help much but it’s a start to concentrate the mind. Now, from my point of view, what you need is a Main Character. Decide whather your MC will be male or female or something else. Human or semi-human. Give the character a problem.

Say she’s just discovered she has a special talent, but the wicked queen wants her to…. And so on.

Forget that. Nows the time to call on your helpers. Everybody is entitiled to five plus one.

I wonder if I can remember their names.

                          Who?

                          What?

                          Why?

                          Where?

                          When?

                          And How?

Now all that’s needed is a lot of hard work.

I’m sure others will be able to add to those standard basics, but I don’t know if you know, Nov. is an awkward month. Most members are doing the yearly ritual of banging their heads on their keyboards as they try to come up with another 1660 (do I remember ther riight number, people?) words for the
                          National Novel Writing Month.

So don’t stop posting your questions. Everybody will be back soon.

I’m not sure anyone could, or would give you a definite opinion on whether you have a good idea or not. On Roving Crits, though, you should be able to get some criticism. It can be tough at first. However, if you persist and work hard things do improve. As long as your work has some sort of continuity, and your English is understandable, don’t let it bother you too much at the beginning. For the average writer whose aim is to tell an entertaining tale you don’t need perfect English, at least for the first draft.
