The novel is translated from Italian and based on a true story. Usually I avoid ‘based on’ stuff but this is free and deals with a pregnant woman arrested in 1943 for collaborating with the partisans. Apart from anything else it might give ideas that can be melded into other genres’. War is war.
Here’s the Publishers Weekly blurb.
“Bonanni’s tragic, brutal novella is exquisitely translated for the first time.… Bonanni’s surreal and grotesque scenes make the madness of the men, and their primordial misogyny, graphically palpable. It is a travesty that English language readers have been denied this profound, gritty novel for so long as it raises serious questions about humanity’s ability to justify violence.”—Publishers Weekly
