For those of us taking part in the annual insanity, we’re getting down to the wire now in preparation/panic time. I’m still working on an outline and trying to get everything else arranged so I can have the first few days free of most other work.
For the rest of you, expect people in chat to be a little more insane than usual. This is our fun time of the year!

October 14, 2013 at 8:54 pm #222476Well, it probably isn’t three weeks anymore. I guess I ought to think about considering deciding whether or not to NANO this year.
I should be done with grading all those papers on October 27. That should leave me time to plan, right?
October 14, 2013 at 11:55 pm #222477At least my NaNo supplies have finally been (will be, tomorrow, but I got the notice and tracking number) shipped out to me. Yes, I need NaNo supplies. Paper and ink, to be exact. Rhodia pads, so I can write quickly and still read what I wrote later, and several shades of Diamine ink for the vintage pens I plan to use. (Mostly lever fillers, which don’t get up the pressure to flush the sacs out well, which means a nice, gentle, well behaved ink like Diamine is best. It isn’t just the ink sac which could be ruined – if ink remains stuck in the feed and nib, sooner or later that pen will be going for cleaning / repairs. In my newer pens, I use Noodlers ink.)
Yes, I’m handwriting NaNo this year. I got the urge to do it… and the last time I got that urge was in 2011. I already had that all planned out, then we got a snowstorm just before Halloween. When I walked down the street the next morning, the entire street was blocked off – and I saw four power poles on the ground, in the middle of a mess of downed trees. There is no way batteries would have lasted long enough to save me that year.
Heck, even in years when I don’t plan to hand write my story, maybe I’d better have things in place so I could, as a backup plan.

October 15, 2013 at 3:11 am #222551Hey, some people don’t know what they are writing until November 1st! So, you have plenty of time to plan! 😆

Pom poms, check.
NaNo writing advice, check.
Sugary and sugar free snacks for the scribblers, check.
Coffee, tea, Red Bull ™, and assorted energy drinks for the scribblers, check.
Turkey shaped confetti for the winner’s lounge, check.Yep, ready to play cheerleader for another year. After the long writer’s block, 50K will not be an objective I can make. (I’m lucky I can make 500 a week right now.)
A local writer who is talking about doing NaNo asked about a challenge… If she writes more than 250K words for NaNo, she wants me to buy an actual cheerleader outfit and show up to writing group in it… (I’m a little mortified at the thought.)
October 16, 2013 at 4:37 pm #222606I can’t break 500 a session, but…
SOMETHING…
Makes…
Me…
Want…
To
Try! Again.

October 16, 2013 at 7:24 pm #222609You could join in with your own personal goal. Say, half, and go for 25,000 words That would be 834 words, and might help you push past your regular limit.

October 19, 2013 at 3:53 am #222479Oh, I am doomed. After several months of using my wife’s laptop every chance I could snag it, I just got a “new” (secondhand) laptop yesterday. Great news, in one way. But… I am legally blind, in a way that is not even “normal” nearsightedness. My vision is quirky. Preset schemes to improve screen vision don’t help me much. So, now that I’ve at least managed to restore it to factory default, I’ve got to move my own cursors onto there, set up a colour scheme and fonts I can use to see without hunching over even worse than usual, install the programs I need… all before NaNo hits. Getting a new computer suited to me, and getting used to using it, usually takes me at least a month.
Aaaggghhh! Eeeek! I am doomed. Truly doomed. This new machine is running Windows 7 Home Premium. I was using XP until July, then Ubuntu since then. I have to get used to a new OS as well. If I manage to make it through this November with 50,000 words, it will be a miracle.
October 19, 2013 at 6:14 am #222655Look under Start-> All Programs -> Accessories -> Ease of Access. There’s a thing there called the Magnifier. It takes a bit to get used to, and can be funky on a smaller screen, but play with it. Basically, it has a pane of a magnifying glass that follows your cursor and provides a magnified viewpoint. I use it when using voice rec from across the room.
Good luck, and don’t say doomed until the final hour on Nov 30th
