Just because I’ve not seen any discussion here (Which may be because the forums are so NEW!) I wanted to see what people thought of this, and how we might work it into a story…
The man traveled 128100 feet into the air  and jumped out. Took him two and a half hours to reach that height, then took him four minutes and twenty seconds to return.
Thoughts?
October 15, 2012 at 5:38 pm #206509I watched it live. Couldn’t leave my seat. Absolutely brilliant!
In his press conference afterwards he said he went into a flat spin and had to fight it for several thousand feet. The spin was forcing blood into his brain and if he hadn’t managed to correct it he would have lost consciousness. He didn’t say he’d have died, but I think that’s the gist of it.
I’ve seen some discussion on Twitter about the existence or not of any scientific benefits from the mission. I think that of course there will be some. The project medical director (whose previous job was looking after the health of space shuttle crews and whose wife died in the Columbia accident in 2003) told the New York Times, “We’re testing new spacesuits, escape concepts and treatment protocols for pressure loss at extreme altitudes.”
October 16, 2012 at 6:50 pm #206511Yeah, and look at the science fiction aspects of it. Dropping spies in from 24 miles out. I love this.
October 16, 2012 at 7:01 pm #206510I actually have a short story that uses this kind of a dive as the climax. Been shopping it around for a couple of years — and now it’s going to be old hat.
October 16, 2012 at 8:57 pm #206770The perils of writing science fiction. (grin)
October 16, 2012 at 9:02 pm #206771Erin, it isn’t old hat yet. It’s red hot right now, so get it out there!
