Productivity Tools: The Pomodoro Technique Timed Writing

I’ve always used timed writing to help get going (as well as 100-word jumps), but I hadn’t realized that the general technique had a name: the Pomodoro Technique (named after the old-fashioned tomato kitchen timers). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomodoro_Technique

I’m still coming out of the haze of grief after Mother Hen’s passing, so I’ve been using all sorts of things to get my focus back so I can write again. Maybe it’s a bit of procrastinating, but I’ve also been using some tools to help that process along.

For timed writing, I found the Pomodoro Keeper app for my iPhone. It has a free version, but I liked it so much that I paid the $1.99 for the full version. I like that I can adjust the length of the timing of the session as I prefer shorter than the regular 25 minutes, as well as how long the breaks are and how many sessions in a row. I can also set goals for how many per day I want to do, and it has nice nice graphs for how many I’ve done in the past 14 and 30 days. A nice little perk is that I can set it to play a song from my music playlists for the active session and the breaks (I use various nature sounds, typically. Youtube has a good variety to choose from!).

Anyone else have any tools for timed writing that they use, perhaps for Android or Google Play?

That sounds interesting . I rarely do timed writings much right now for a variety of reasons, but they’ve been a good tool in the past and are sure to be so again.

I seem to go in streaks. For a while one thing works, then another. For a while timed writing just wasn’t as fun. But right now I’m trying everything to help me get back into writing.

I use timed writing when I have no idea what the characters would do to solve their current problem. I allow myself to write anything at all, not part of the novel draft, and sometimes even surprise myself with the answers the characters give to even the simplest questions.

I use the Pomodoro technique all the time. For writing, and for stretch breaks as I tend to keep sitting without a break for hours if I get really involved. It works really well.
