Some posts from secure forums are showing up in the recent activities with snippets that shouldn’t be shown when you’re not logged in. The one I noticed was the Daily goals, but this may be a broader permissions setting or just one that was skipped. If something has to show, the titles from that board are usually “safe” but a lot can be said that shouldn’t be scrapeable by bots :).Thanks for taking this on. FM needed to take the leap into modern websites :).

She remakes mechanical devices, and he dreams of becoming a steamship captain in The Steamship Chronicles. Book 1 is free in eBook.
https://margaretmcgaffeyfisk.com/the-steamship-chronicles/September 10, 2019 at 10:55 am #299784FYI, probably drawn from the same code, but the Site Wide Activities [RSS] in the sidebar has the same issue with the preview showing when logged out regardless of permissions for the individual boards.

https://margaretmcgaffeyfisk.com/the-steamship-chronicles/September 10, 2019 at 3:10 pm #299926I changed out one of the widgets so I could fine-tune the access settings. The Forum Activity area now only shows the basic header information but does not include any snip from the posts.
The other widget I changed to exclude the forum but includes everything else. This way we still have plenty of activity updates on the right side of the site (which helps our Google rating).
Setting this as resolved unless another problem crops up.
September 11, 2019 at 1:34 am #300030The concept about just showing the headers to do the combo of activity with more privacy is solid, but I just posted the link (https://fmwriters.com/fm/activity/) into a browser I’ve never used for FM old or new and am still seeing the snippets. Depending on the backend software, it may be a matter of not distributed out to all the Web so a couple of days it may catch up, but if the page is server generated, something hasn’t come through, I’m afraid. And TT is right over the mountains so I usually get their updates pretty quickly.
The Forum Activity widget does appear fixed to just the title and author while the RSS activities widget still has the blurb.

https://margaretmcgaffeyfisk.com/the-steamship-chronicles/September 11, 2019 at 6:00 am #300037I forgot about the link in the header. Fortunately that is an easy fix. Took the ‘resolved’ off the post to remind me to work on it when I get home from work.
September 11, 2019 at 4:48 pm #300043Link in the header has been changed to the page that was once linked in the sidebar. Took that sidebar portion out and rearranged 3 widgets in a different order (also consolidated them).
Are you talking about the widget “Site Wide Activities [RSS]”? If so, it no longer reports forum activity. It does, however, list other activity including any updates to profiles, blog posts, updated profile activity of “What’s new, NAME”, and so forth. For those, yes, it does have snippets.
Do we have this resolved?
September 11, 2019 at 6:51 pm #300069Yup. Looks like you can close this out. The Site Wide RSS was a blog post snippet, I guess. I could tell the difference between the profile updates, but forum posts and blog updates are a wee bit too similar :). And yes, the link in the header is fixed. However, anyone who bookmarked the other page can still see the everything so it’s probably wise to do a redirect for that page if you can’t lock it out.

https://margaretmcgaffeyfisk.com/the-steamship-chronicles/September 11, 2019 at 9:28 pm #300071I went ahead and deleted the old page. 🙂
September 11, 2019 at 10:04 pm #300075LOL! That works too. Very straightforward :).
