I’ve been using Chronories as my offline 750words.com replacement. It was kind of expensive and didn’t have a word count feature, but it had a few other neat things. It was okay. Then I went to the Mac App Store to check on something about it, and it wasn’t there. I went to their website, and it wasn’t there. They appear to have dropped the product. The product has a proprietary document interface, so this is a bad thing in my book. I can export the diary entries as pdf files, I think, so that’s not all bad, but I’m unwilling to invest any more effort in that format.

On January 1st, I began searching for new journaling software. I want an ability to export into a variety of common formats. I wanted a word count capability. I want the ability to resize images should I choose to insert them (rarely).

I evaluated MiJournal, Memoires, iReminisce, Dossier, and MacJournal. For various reasons, I’ve eliminated all but Dossier and MacJournal. Dossier appears to be something other than a journaling software, but it also appears as it if might work. For various reasons, I tried Scrivener for this previously, and I wasn’t comfortable with it for a Journal. So far, MacJournal seems to be leading the pack, but at $40, it’s kind of pricey. Day One has received top billing recently, but it won’t work on Snow Leopard, and they don’t have a free trial I can download from their website. I’m a huge fan of try before you buy. Especially if I have to spend money.

I’m using MacJournal for morning pages so far (yes, I know you’re supposed to hand write them. I’m choosing to ignore that instruction). I see there’s a capability to upload to blogs, so I may consider preparing some blog entries in a different journal at some point.

Have any of you used MacJournal? If so, what has your experience been? If you’ve settled on another journaling software, what have you chosen and why?
