Hi all, I was “Doomskull” on the old site and spent much of my time over there lurking. I’ve been working up the courage to get my butt writing for years now but am working on my first novel now. I plan on being an active member this time around and jumping in everywhere.
About me: 39yr old happily married father of five. I work as a Correctional Drill Instructor at an adult Boot Camp. Former Marine with one semester of college. I couldn’t stand the overgrown high school mentality so I dropped out. I have been an avid reader of pretty much everything I could get my hands on for years and I like to write and I am a pretty good artist when I have the time to work on anything. I enjoy fitness and lifting weights, hunting and fishing etc. Pretty standard “guy” stuff.
I have to say though, I’m dying to get all these stories that have been in my head for years onto paper. I don’t care if they ever sell it would just be nice. Creativity is a personal and intimate experience and I think that is what has frightened me for so long. I do however wish I had paid more attention in my high school grammar classes!
Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Getting those stories out of your head and written down is even better. You’ll feel better for having done it. Who knows, you might have a bestseller in there somewhere, too!
Nano is short for National Novel Writing Month (also called Nanowrimo) which is an annual writing challenge every November to write 50,000 words in 30 days. That averages out 1667 words per days. A lot of writers here participate, including myself. It’s not for everyone, but for some of us it’s a fantastic yearly rush of crazy writing. Zette has even set us up a specific board here in this forum so we can talk among ourselves, plus we have special chat room for our nano craziness. You can find out more on their official website:

October 21, 2012 at 1:08 pm #207137Wow Nanowrimo sounds like it might be a bit much for me. On the other hand it might be just what I need to kick-start my butt! Thanks for the info. I think I will give it a try, what do I have to lose!
October 22, 2012 at 2:15 am #207109Hey great to see you on the new site! Even if you don’t want to be a career author, we’re all glad you’re here. Nano does seem daunting -even to me- but I’m using it this year to get a 1st draft out and going. Who knows, maybe it’s something you can use too.
October 22, 2012 at 2:55 am #207414Honestly being a career writer is what I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid. I devoured books when I was growing up and still finish 2 or 3 a week. I always thought it would be the greatest career in the world. Not for the financial reasons but to be able to inspire others with your writing and create worlds that live and breath that others can experience…awesome. However, I am not under the assumption that what I write now will make me the next George R.R. Martin or Stephen King but it would still be fabulously cool to just share the worlds living in my head for years.
NaNo seems like a good fit for me right now. It will at least get my butt moving!
Thanks for the kind words!
