Hello, I am a newbie, doing a comprehensive course in writing with WB as well as proofreading and copyediting which I must soon return to but re-registered for another four years with the former as my mother had not been well last year so I am trying to get back and squeeze in my writing. I am currently nursing an idea for a short story set in the period between the two wars, set in central Europe, at least Russia, based on an idea from a dream about a minor member of the Russian Royal family whose husband had been assasinated, she is helped to escape to Britain but I am trying to work out which country, Scotland or Wales. I have a sort of vague picture of a steam train travelling through mountainous country, its slopes lined with conifers. Even Britain was not at that time, totally stable and there was some debate as to whether to allow the the King’s cousin to come over. I am trying to work out a fictional tale in which this lesser Royal acts as an emissary in trying to persuade the politicians to ascend to Nicholas and Alexander to come over as refugees. Setting the story in winter, I suppose I am stretching the imagination to one of these parts of Britain mentioned, covered in snow. I vaguely recall seing an image in my mind along these lines and thought that this might be ideal say for People’s Friend.

Good luck with getting back to your writing. It sounds like an awesome historical novel you’ve got there, I hope you can work it out into a draft. Good luck with that. It sounds like you already have the mood and the opening scene and something of the setting down, as well as several characters… I’m curious: who’s on that train, in your mind?
Cheers,
Arike
January 18, 2013 at 4:48 pm #214402It is a Russian Countess and her son but there are locals yet I am having to think out which country in the UK they will end up in, Arike, Wales or Scotland. As I say, I had this image of a steam train with mountains in the immediate background from something I probably saw on television or in a magazine. It is funny how certain images stick in one’s mind. The funny thing about this, is that the theme about this lesser Royal Russian is that I had this curious dream when I was in Portugal, her husband was assasinated and she fled, ending up in London. Now here is the curious bit. I was with her one minute then the next, walking down the street and she was coming in the opposite direction, dressed in Edwardian costume and she was holding on to a child, there was a church in the background. A few months later, my parents had bought two Elgar records and do you know, I don’t know if this is serendipity or just plain creepy but there was a picture of the woman I saw in my dream, she was actually very beautiful and she was holding on to the child. What do you think. Then I watched something on TV perhaps last year with a steam train approaching, belching out smoke, in the background, were mountains or steep hills covered in conifers and snow. It was really surreal. I felt both these strands of ideas had a story rolled into one.
January 19, 2013 at 2:31 am #214403Hello and welcome to Forward Motion. That’s really great that you got into the WB course. Good luck with it! I’m in awe that you can juggle so many things at once. By the way, the background of your short story sounds intriguing.
Have a look around the site and if you have questions, please ask.

That’s an interesting idea you’ve got, there. Are we talking Alternative History?
January 20, 2013 at 4:57 pm #214587I suppose we are in a way, alternative history. I am still nursing the idea although I have taken down the framework of the story.
