Ah :). The sad thing is what seems like an out there joke to you has been tried many times on agents, publishers, and probably reviewers.

Another personal point on this discussion — I don’t do book reviews. It’s a tough choice because I know a lot of my friends (here and elsewhere) write great books and I would love to help promote those. But, I have this fear that if I start reviewing the books I like, someone (maybe someone I barely know) will come up demanding that I review their book. I don’t think people HERE would do it, but this isn’t the only internet place I dwell. And, if that happens, what do I say if I don’t want to. If I say no, they might get mad and vindictive on me. If I say yes, and don’t like the book, I’d feel obligated to tell the truth about it, and again, that would make them mad. If I simply refuse to do reviews at all, I can say, “I don’t do reviews” to everyone and avoid most of the problems.

So, I guess it’s a selfish decision, but I like to avoid the drama.

I was asked to do a review by somebody I knew and had a hard time. I feel that a review should be genuine in it’s apprasial, and this would be hard to do for a friend. It may not turn out to be a proper review, especially if the book is trash. Hard to be honest with a friend’s work in that case (unless you’re very good at making friends — get a new one tomorrow.)

I’d like to get some reviews (a review) of my book. It’s up to 603 downloads now, and the only review I’d cherish would be one from a stranger. Not that I wasn’t very pleased with the “I liked it! that came from an FM member.

That’s one of the reasons I do reviews of what I’m reading or I request the books rather than letting people request I do. Now if someone I knew made noises like they’d appreciate a review, and it’s something on my list already or something that sounds interesting, I’ve been known to stick it in my queue, but I don’t make a habit of it, especially since my queue is pretty backed up on a regular basis. For example, I know what I’m going to be reviewing through October at this point, assuming the read lives up to the preview. On some, I might be willing to review on Amazon but not on my site because I try and avoid the overly critical there. Haven’t been in that position yet, but it could happen.

Of course, you’ve already decided to do reviews. What I’m loooking for is some way to get readers to want to review. Some sort of incentive.

You could do what publishers do and offer to profile a review clip on your website. Only trouble is what if the review comes in horrible negative…or worse, horribly written.
