It’s time to start thinking about our goals for 2013. Anyone here have writing-oriented resolutions for the upcoming year? Care to share?

        B) I am working on rereading some of my earlier novels and working on wrapping up their endings in a tighter fashion than their current state.

Yay for wrapping up projects. :silly:

My goals are to keep up with my 2yn project and start outlining every story idea I get.

            Well, technically, I don’t do resolutions. :P

That being said, I’m looking at adjusting my writing schedule to better encorporate editing into it. I’m adjusting total word output expected.

And I’m trying to read more.

I do not do resolutions. Resolutions are those things you almost always end up breaking.

              I do goals.

But I’ve been so busy, I haven’t had time to even start mapping out what I want for this coming year.

As soon as I get the work on Vision done. . . .

I don’t do resolutions in the traditional sense. I’ll just give up on those, so what’s the point? And I try to make my goals ones I have a decent chance of sticking to, because if I don’t, I’ll give up. And the whole point of goals is to accomplish something.

So – without getting so specific I’ll spoil it for myself – I want to work on finishing more of my unfinished work, and also on keeping up the increased pace I’ve managed to learn in 2012. Perhaps not the exact pace, but the idea that I put my butt in the chair and write, almost every day. (Almost leaving enough room for really messed up days when it really can’t happen. Since I’ve averaged significantly better than the 1,667 words a day needed to win NaNo for the year, I don’t think that wiggle room did me any harm.) I’m willing to consider a somewhat more relaxed pace because I want to allow more time for editing, so I can get some of my unfinished work into decent shape and figure out what to do with it…

(One reason I wind up with a lot of unfinished work is because I try to fit in writing whenever I can. For example, today my wife wanted me to go with her to an appointment at the hospital. So I wound up sitting around for a long time waiting for her. I did not have anything I was working on in a place where I could pick it up easily, but rather than just sit there, I pulled out a pocket notebook and a pen, and started to write. I don’t even know what this story will be or where it’s headed yet; I’ll have to do an exploratory draft to figure it out. Then I’ll have to go back and fix it up and write the “real” story. Occasions like this, plus raging ADD, mean I’ll probably always have more WiPs than most of you. I don’t care about that, as long as I can get the proportion – my baseline – down a bit. That’s progress. Some day, maybe I’ll do better than that, but I’ve got to start somewhere.)

I’ve been thinking about what my goals are for the coming year(s). I want to get a regular writing practice started. Rather than come home and plop in front of the TV or spend all night looking up fun things to do in my classroom, I’d like to devote just a bit of time every day to write. Even if it’s just an hour.

I also second the person up above who said they want to keep up with the 2 year novel class this year. That’s another goal for me.

Finally, I’d like to take part in NANOWRIMO in 2013. I did it (and won) in 2011, but skipped it this year.

My biggest writing goal is to actually write again! I’ve been out of the groove for over two years, thanks to an unimaginable itch to get a certificate in Archaeology, and a major job change (though not to anything fun, like said Archaeology fetish).

                    So goals are:

                    • Write most every day
                    • Submit SF WIP by early Spring
                    • first Draft of the next SF novel by year end

Resolutions, goals, doesn’t matter what they are called, I’m hoping 2013 is a MUCH better year than 2012 for my life and writing. I want to actually keep with 2YN instead of giving up and having to drop out because of life. I also want to set up a business plan so that I can start moving forward with all my unfinished work. I would also like to have a complete draft by the end of the year, not including editing, just the draft with “The End.” stamped at the end.

Look at the trouble you started: Resolutions vs Goals… for me, it makes a difference what’s it called because goals I will achieve. It’s a results based system with measurable results. Resolutions tend to be behavior modifying attempts. But without measurements, I can’t deal with them. So: Goals.

Write MORE. Write WELL. I have specific measures: flash fiction, short stories, novellas, novel draft (50k left) and a novel revision. I will be participating in challneges here and elsewhere to get it done in a fun socialable manner. :)

I’m also going to squeeze fitness into my busy schedule. I was good for most of last year, but lost it after October.

I will have a blog post up next week on the specifics. Hee.The blog. That will also be undergoing some changes. I’m going to try and blog about things that aren’t about writing. Imagine that.

I remember. The day may be off by a couple but the month and year are solid.

That’s useful. I can pin it down to some time in 2006, but that’s about it. If I had to guess, I’d say spring or summer. Since you had an exact date, I thought you’d found a way to get that information from the old site or something. Oh, well…

I captured mine from the old forum and transferred it here to be part of my profile. You may want to look at the old site before it goes down to get your own date of joining.

I do have some resolutions, in the sense Dawn mentioned of trying to modify behaviors. I need to replace some bad habits with some good habits, in both my writing life and my personal life. Nothing too earth-shattering or difficult: be more aware, eat better, exercise more, get to bed on time more often, write more regularly.

It’s not an all-or-nothing kind of resolution where you will yourself to something for a couple of weeks, fall off the wagon, and give up. It will be slow, with lots of ups and downs. Changes don’t happen overnight. As long as the trend’s positive, I’ll be happy.
