I came across this via a Twitter link and thought it should go here since it applies to both SF and Fantasy writing.

The most worrying thing about rules I think is the possibility that an author has constructed a great book, but that it gets rejected because some pedant who’s just completed a creative writing course has a job as a first reader at an agent or publisher.
Rules are made to be broken. That’s how the human race progresses. Whether that’s good or not is another question.
