I’m posting this link here as this article is good plotbunny fodder for several genres. Fantasy, science fiction, historical, and even mystery and romance. Well, heck, pretty much all of them, really. There are suggestions for other lost civilizations in the comments, so give them a read for other ideas (such as the huge lost civilization in the Amazon that so little is known about).

December 28, 2012 at 3:42 pm #210179Awesome!! Booking marking these for later because I’m revising a story now and don’t want to get caught up yet in “OMG I want to write this”. Hee. Thanks for sharing!

First, it is undeniably an interesting place to look for story ideas. I have no desire to hurt you for posting it. Those who let themselves be put off by the more controversial aspects of the site will miss out on plotbunnies racing and hopping all over the place.
However, I’d caution anyone to be careful in using this site for research. Certainly, some of their information is accurate. Not all, but some. As for the rest – well, if you choose to believe everything you read here, that is your choice. But as a writer, you may want to consider that unless your audience all share those beliefs, you’re going to have a lot of readers convinced you’re wrong.
I don’t care what anyone else writes. After all, if I don’t like it, I don’t have to read it. So this isn’t about personal opinion. I do think, as writers, we at least need to know when we’re moving into areas that are likely to prove controversial. And if you treat some of the details on that site as fact, you’re moving very far into that territory. This is not to say the site isn’t useful – just to point out that you may want to be extra-careful in your research before you use some of this information, at least as fact. (If you use it as an idea for a fantasy, say, then that really doesn’t matter.) It is worth the time to research anything that interests you, though, because – in my opinion – I’d say the site is a “mixed bag”.
