Anna Pigeon on a winter study of wolves, with murder in iceberg land. Oddly, one of those books that was difficult to finish.

That's the weird part--I don't know. It was well-written, a good story, and yet, something seemed to be missing that would normally pull me back to the story.

Not a lot to do with zookeeping--it's a book about a gay romance and a woman whose mother gets Alzheimer's. Gets a "Meh" from me. Pretty unmemorable.

Non-fiction book written by a woman veteran from the current war. It's been 19 years since I was in the Persian Gulf, and this was still a hard read.

The story of Elvis' death told from the perspective of his personal physician. The most shocking--and yet not surprising--thing was how the media played up the death as being drugs because it made a better story than natural causes.

This is a publisher's ARC, so I'll be posting a review on my blog in the next few days.

Like the last book, the story seemed thrown together and not really solid. It may be that the series has started to run out of steam.

A romantic suspense--I was hoping to get a little more of the spy stuff, but the the spy stuff was missing in action and the agent was kind of dumb to be a spy. Some great descriptions of France, though! And the author did better with the politics of Washington, DC then I expected.

This one is research for my WIP. A fascinating discussion into auroras, with some beautiful photos. It gives a lot of information on how people viewed the aurora over history, and in different areas, plus all the scientific theories that were proposed.

A story revolving around meteors sounded cool, but it was never very clear who exactly the main character of the story was and the ending was a big disappointment.

An interesting book on marketing mistakes. I didn't realize quality is an empty word (what does "It's high quality" mean?). The one thing that really stood out was a comment on costs of items--if the item excels in what it needs to do, it can be high-priced. If it doesn't, any price is too much.

Problems with pacing in this story. The danger flatlined out through most of the book, then suddenly everything happened in the last 50 pages. Not sure why the Amish were in the story. Didn't seem to have a reason for being there.

This was actually a reprint of all his articles published in book format. An interesting look at how we we react to security problems--often an overreaction to things that are uncommon (shoe bombers). It has an interesting discussion on why so many weapons get missed at the airport screenings, too.

The story of one of the contractors that was kidnapped by terrorists--and survived. Hard book to read in the beginning. A lot of in depth detail into a difficult topic without much of a break.

This was in eBook format--handy since I'm snowed in, my parking lot is iced over, and the library is closed. Just purchase it online, and zap! it's here.

Great military science fiction book with great political subplots. Lots of action! Definitely going to be reading this entire series.

A bit of a miss in the series--it seems to lose focus halfway through the story and doesn't have the "Wow" kind of battle at the end that's been the showpiece of the other stories.

I read this one of order because it, oddly, was the only one not available in eBook format (who publishes a full set of a series and skips a middle book). Like the one that comes before it, the plot's unfocused and hard to follow. It doesn't quite seem like he knew what to do with the story except that there was a big battle at the end.

I've been having so much difficulty cooking for one with existing family-sized recipes that I thought I would try this to see if it gives me something different. While there are some recipes, they're more for ideas rather than an actual recipe book. Instead, the book focuses on learning cooking techniques. For example, we get a basic recipe for soup (i.e., 1 pound meat, 1 pound vegetables, etc.). From there, it describes cooking techniques for preparing meat and vegetables for soup.

This is part of a mystery series about a Navajo woman police officer who has to walk the line between traditions and solving crimes. I like the stories because they have a good balance bringing the two cultures together without being insulting or preaching (another similar series did both of those). Here, a man who goes overboard on religion starts killing off the women and the children he fathered to purge his sins.

This started with a nice idea. It's a free eBook with the intent to introduce readers to samples from new YA Fantasy books coming out. There's one in there that I would like to read that I probably would have never seen.

Where it falls flat:

1. The samples of the various books didn't come across as swashbuckling to me. It just seemed to be the latest YA fantasy releases.

2. But the bigger issue is that most of the samples provided were chapters from the middle of the book. I had a really hard time getting into those chapters because I couldn't figure out what was going on.

Would have been nice to see all first chapters.

Like #32, this is a free ebook with samples of chapters from upcoming fantasy books. Like the other book, they drew samples from the middle of the book, making it hard to get involved.

It's a nice idea, but first chapters please!

The title's a little misleading. This is a book written for CEOs, to show them how to deal with media. Many CEOs are really bad at it and end up causing more problems than they need.

This is a new release of the story of POW Shoshanna Johnson. Very well written. It gives us a feel of what it was like without veering into hard to read. We also get to see the other side of the story--like how the press wanted the disability issue to be about race and jealousy of fellow soldier Jessica Lynch because that made for a better headline (the army doesn't deal well with disabled soldiers, and it comes through in the inconsistencies in the policies and how the paperwork is reviewed).

Well worth the read.

This is a book that delves into the history of the Skull and Bones secret organization that many of our politicians belong to. Very interesting story.

I'm doing this one for a book review for Thomas Nelson (that'll be posted in my blog this week).

If you're a dedicated Republication or Democrat, you won't like this book. Judge Napolitano goes after issues that are near and dear to every politician's heart and doesn't cover them with spin to make them sound better. Very well documented with court cases. One of the ones that stuck with me was how a man was arrested for having a lot of money (an indication he must be dealing in drugs), and they confiscated his expensive car. Though he was proven innocent of the accusations, the car was given as spoils to a DA. The judge had to get it back to the owner, and later the DA's wife whined about how the judge had taken away her husband's car!

Not a book that can be read in one sitting, though.

Felt like a bit of a historical novel. This is one was set in the Pacific Northwest, based loosely on a Caucasian being the first American. This is story is high on action, political intrigue, and magic as a war is about to break out between the tribes.

If this book interests you, the publisher is selling it and the other older books in the series for $4.99. But the books are formula--don't read one after another or you'll be able to predict how it comes out.

This is one that, if I'd had another book handy, I'd have put it down after the first chapter. I found the voice annoying, and events in the book seemed to happen because the author needed to happen, not because they made sense. Meh!

This is a nice book analyzing what traits successful CEOs have that makes them different. It's a great segue into thinking about how to apply this to books. What was particularly striking was that many of the successful people didn't know and had to think about it.

By the way, I remember one writer who complained that she had Aspergers and thought she would never get anywhere as a writer. The writer of this book has ADD, which he mentions throughout.

Ancient Egyptian chapters, action--a great story except for the ending. I'm not like the trend of pushing character arcs into impossible to happen scenarios.

A fascinating look at the TV series The Simpsons, which recently became the longest run TV show of all time, beating out Gunsmoke. One of the things I found most interesting is the creative process of how the early scripts came together. It made me want to see the older episodes again to compare what I read in the book.

This book has powerful concepts. Pixar's unique corporate environment allows creativity to flourish. Many corporate cultures penalize mistakes, but Pixar uses mistakes made over the course of the project as a tool for making a better product. This was such a powerful message that I had to a list of five things I would do differently on the next book and what I would gladly repeat on my blog. http://garridon.wordpress.com/2010/03/19/learning-from-mistakes-and-progress/

Admittedly, this drew my attention because I signed up for pitch sessions with agents. One of the most interesting points was being able to describe your idea on a cocktail napkin. Think about that in context for an elevator pitch. I'll be pondering this book for a bit.

When I looked up reviews for the series, I keep seeing people say the Honor Harrington series was better, so I checked a couple out. I think this series is better, at least for me, because it has lots of action but isn't violent and is just plain fun. That last is very important for me in a book.

A really interesting book on the concept of mind mapping. The book is full color with many illustrations of different kinds of mind maps. It also describes different applications, like using them in school or in a meeting.

I'm using one for my submission list.
