My eyes still glaze over at the political jargon, but I am learning a little more with each Clancy book I read. So, I guess that's saying something. It was interesting to see the Japanese as the Antagonists this time around...and to think a war could start over a car accident.
Adored the Clark/Chavez scenes, as I always do.
I think the ending really made the book for me though. Jack Ryan is offered the Vice presidency (after the former Vice President resigns due to accusations of rape)and takes it reluctantly stipulating that it will only be till the end of the current President's term (exactly eleven months). Only, in the last three pages, the President is killed by a vengeful Japanese Captain who wasn't properly detained and now Jack must take up the mantle as President. I do so love when an Author pushes his/her characters. *g* Lucky me, I have Executive Orders, the next book in the series, at the hand to read next. ~~~~~~Signature's Off~~~~~~

Yay, another Clark&Chavez fan! Except for a few Ryan scenes in the earlier books, these two always supply most of what passes for characterization in Clancy books
The vague 9/11 parallels in those last three pages are always chillingly prescient too. ~~~~~~Signature's Off~~~~~~

I won this during a Giveaway. As with all anthologies, you take the good with the bad and while their were quite a few that didn't suit my taste, I was surprised by how many I really enjoyed.
My favorites from the Anthology are as follows:
Midnight at Sheremetyevo by Remittance Girl
Wait Until Dark, Montresor by Thomas S. Roche
Enlightenment by Amber Hipple
Blood and Bootleg by Teresa Noelle Roberts
Fair Play by G.B. Kensington (hands down my favorite of the favorites)
Advantage by Ciara Finn
Nightlife by Madeleine Oh
Once An Addict...by A.D.R. Forte ~~~~~~Signature's Off~~~~~~

:laughs: having experienced late night airports in Russia, the addition of vampires definitely adds a whole new layer to an already worrisome combination *grin* ~~~~~~Signature's Off~~~~~~

1335 pages. Two weeks.
What a ride.
There's a lot to love about this book, especially as a Clancy fan. I was hooked from page one, sentence one, where a 747 airliner has crashed into the Capitol building, killing the President, the Joint Chiefs, the Supreme Court and just about all of Congress. John Patrick Ryan, confirmed Vice President only a few minutes before (or rather, a book ago) is now left to pick up the pieces. Only, he's not a politician, and the press is ready to rip into him like starving lions on a wounded gazelle. And they're not the only ones...
Jack is basically up the creek without a paddle for most of the book, and as we all know, conflict is fun to watch, or read, rather. When its not happening to us.
For once, my favorite moments were not with the infamous Mr. C and his savvy Latino partner Chavez, but rather, it was with the formidable Antagonists. Between Daryaei forming the UIR, The Prime Minister of India being a right biznatch, China being sneaky, Dr. Moudi and team of scientists fortifying the Mayinga strain of the Ebola virus for bio-warfare, it gets pretty exciting.
All in all, one of my favorites. Right up there with Rainbow Six and Without Remorse.

All I care to say is that I think I may have lost a few IQ points reading this book.
It didn't read quite like Clancy's other work, especially considering it was SO short.(His work usually spans 700+ pages and this was a mere 400+) I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't actually write it... ~~~~~~Signature's Off~~~~~~

Good first effort in a new genre, I quite enjoyed it a lot. Didn't have the same "spunk" as her Hollows books but that's to be expected. I find myself looking forward to reading the sequel "Early to Death, Early to Rise" and that's always a good sign.
If you're a fan of the Hollows books, I felt in the beginning that the characters resembled the Hollows cast in small ways. Particularly Nakita and Grace, but as the book goes on that feeling dwindled. It's veeeery short. 200+ pages. Might be more in the soft cover edition though. ~~~~~~Signature's Off~~~~~~

Are the Hollows books/series done now ? Shannon? I got into too many series for awhile that went nowhere and kind of stopped starting new ones. I don't work (much) in the summer though so I am looking for a series or two. Someone recommended the "Kitty" series which is paranormal and I'm looking for a few more. ~~~~~~Signature's Off~~~~~~
