As I am sure most of you have noticed by now, the Back to School classes are coming back, starting September.

However, we are still looking for more people who are willing to teach classes on their favorite subjects.
These subjects could potentially be any real world topic that influences writing or world building. Past topics have included astronomy, siege warfare, mental disorders, accounting and polar bears.

Everyone who has in the past tought a class is welcome to return, either to repeat their class or to teach a different subject.
Ideally, I would like to have another class or two by an experienced teacher first, so that any new recruits how it works and what they are getting themselves into before it is their turn.

I look forward to hearing from you, either in this thread or via PM.

I haven't given a BtS class before, but I can give a short one on a topic I'm familiar with but most writers get wrong - running long distances.

Ideally youd give a one month class, or team up with someone who also has a shorter class on a related topic.

I have an idea that I'm not sure would be suitable for BTS, but I suppose it doesn't do any harm to run it past you. This is also very much a "floater" right now, so please don't count on my doing such a course any time soon. (My father is dying right now, and I may be forced to move soon - so, all in all, I am not feeling able to make any commitments I don't absolutely have to. If there is a possibility this might be useful, I'd start working on it as I could, then let you know when I was ready enough to be slotted in whenever you could use me next. Sorry if that's inconvenient, but I figure it will be less so if I at least warn you in advance.)

I find the subject of writing implements and tools and technology - most especially the fountain pen - fascinating. There are a lot of things that might surprise you to be learned. (For example, although the term didn't arise until much later, the first fountain pens actually existed during the Middle Ages. And, yes, they were crude things, although I'd kill for a chance to hold one and try one out, just for the experience.) My doubt is primarily that it also has such relevance to writers, in terms of considering how the tools you use affect the process of writing, and of understanding the various options, that I don't know if it should be a BTS topic or not. In my mind, it's more of a topic about writing. In fact, the topic could easily be expanded to consider the digital tools used in writing as well, and their effects on the writing process (and, no, I don't mean to say there is "one right tool" - the point is more to think about the various effects each tool has on you, and how a certain design or interface might influence your work). Or, it could be kept to a more limited focus that only considered a certain segment, such as tools for writing by hand, or even tools for writing with liquid ink by hand.

Hugs to you for your father, though.

Just a reminder that were still looking for more teachers...

Also, its September, and the first class is about to begin. The first lesson will be posted on Monday in the BtS board.

Not sure if this would be a good topic, but maybe something on military culture? I was in the army for about twelve years, and most of the perspective about the military comes from the men, not the women.

Great, thanks! I've already had to do a much shorter version for my critique group, so it's had me thinking about how to convey the culture.

Cool! I was looking over the guidelines -- I can't outline, so I'll either have to write up the whole thing and give it to you, or write up the whole thing and then do an outline off of it.
