Finally found a copy of this at a bookstore in Boston, along with the third in the series. I know I could have given in & ordered from amazon or borders online, but it's so much more fun to hunt them down. I picked up the second book in the series when I was in Boston a couple years ago and didn't realize until I was part way in that it was the second book. So I set it aside, because I like to read in order. Despite the pretty wingy horse on the cover which makes it look a bit like pre-teen horse-mad fiction, it's really more mature than you might think. Which is right in keeping with the other, edgier books I've read by the author, published under her real name, Louise Marley. (And I just have to mention that the way the wings are drawn on the cover-horse, I don't see how you could strap a saddle on it's back. Maybe an engineer could figure something out, but not me. Also the hooves are only slightly bigger than the nostrils which is just not right.) There's not too much I can say without giving away the plot, so I'll just say that I really enjoyed the story & thought she took it in some very interesting and unusual directions.

(Edited a few typos and repetitions)
