Despite hearing lots of negative comments about this book while I was reading it for my young adult literature class, I really liked it. I'm not sure if I would have liked it when I was a young adult, though--I was much less forgiving of anything "realistic" back then.

I really connected with the way Ponyboy felt, especially how he felt both a part of his family and friendship group, and how he felt different from it.

On the other hand, I thought it kind of simplified social groups with teens. Personally, I wasn't part of any group, and that was a struggle, but the book doesn't address this sort of kid: everyone is either a greaser or a Soc. I wonder: what about the people marginalized from BOTH groups? Do they get to enjoy sunsets, too?

Of course, that's completely separate from whether the plot or characterization was good, etc., so it's kind of useless as a public comment on a writer's board.
