Some level of unpleasant is likely. A good, strong leader is one who has to give some effort into collecting and keeping followers. Even natural leaders do, it's just that it comes naturally and so they're not so conscious of it until faced with someone who balks at the cues that have worked all along.

There's a level of arrogance, even when deserved, in a leader. They have to have enough inborn confidence to attract followers, something that often translates as a touch of superiority...or mothering depending on the context.
