I don't know the situation in UK, since I live in Australia, but I have produced a number of booklets and such for events.

The most economical method I have found here, depending on numbers, is using a copy service.

The services I have used here is Snap or Cost Less Copies. Also the local university has a copy service available to the public. I mention thier names so you can google them and see if you have access so something similar.

What I have produced is a magazine like booklet - soft cover, folded and stapled - both A5 size and A4 size.

Both of these places will take either a printed copy or a file - the file I give them is a PDF. I always give them the booklet in A4 size and they print in the size I require.

One booklet had a glossy colour cover, another had a color middle page. I've also done a black and white cover but on paper with a higher GSM (grams per square meter).

The only resetiction I had was the number of pages - it had to be a multiple of 4.

Working with the staff was no problems either, a few visits with samples and a few trial runs - one place charged me for the trials, another charged me for the 5th and 6th, one place didn't charge me at all - and everything was set up well before the printing was needed. It meant that when I got all the content - which of course came at the last minute - I could send it off at the very latest and know I would be picking up something good.

I can't remember the exact cost, but that would be irrelavant anyway, but for the quantities I was printing (from 50 upto 500) these printing services were very economical.
