For most users, if you're visiting any site that will throw stuff like that in front of you, you're better off ignoring it anyway. No matter how popular that site is. Any window you don't explicitly launch appearing on your screen is a bad sign. The ability and the willingness to launch anything on your system without your co-operation is enough, in my opinion, to call into question the honesty of the person doing it - and they've already shown they can do things you didn't ask them to. I've personally seen things most people - including, probably, the site owners profiting from the ads - would dismiss as "just popup ads" that concealed darker exploits. Some are set up to launch code silently at any click within their window, while others rig the "X" in the corner as a launch button. True, many don't go that far, but unless you manage to inspect the code behind them, how will you know?
