90575, Join March Madness 2012!
Posted by zette, Mon Mar-26-12 05:51 PM

Are you ready for another round of madness? Starting at 12:01 am March 27th (your time), Forward Motion will hold a week-long writing dare. This dare can help you jump-start your new novel, push through the middle, or race to the end. Or, if you are really daring, you can write an entire novel in one week and go out like a literary lion for March 2012!

If you are working on short stories, poetry or even nonfiction articles, you can still take part by writing the equivalent of an anthology! All you need do is write the required number of words listed in one of the levels below. (That would be a LOT of poetry!) No emails, posts, blogs, journals or anything of that sort can count toward your total. Notes and world building can only count if they are incorporated into the larger work -- that is, if you are writing along and suddenly realize you need to know more about your aliens and write a bunch of notes that will help you expand them in the rewrite, then they count. You cannot, however, do nothing but notes or world building for this challenge.

The challenge will begin at 12:01 AM (your time) on March 27th and ends at 11:59 PM (your time) on April 2nd.

Remember, the manuscript does not have to be perfect. This is first draft material.

You have a few hours to prepare yourselves and your loved ones for this madness. Make out your wills. . . or at least your outlines. Post here if you intend to join in.

Choose a category from the list below. And remember, this is all fun.

Right?

The choices:

  • Level 1 -- 1000 words a day -- 7,000 words for the week.

  • Level 2 -- 2000 words a day -- 14,000 words for the week

  • Level 3 -- 3000 words a day -- 21,000 words for the week

  • Level 4 -- 4000 words a day -- 28,000 words for the week

  • Level 5 -- 5000 words a day -- 35,000 words for the week

  • Level 6 -- Completed first Draft Novel of 40,000 or more words
This level can include previous material to reach a completed first draft, but you will have to write 40k of it during this week.

  • Level 6a -- Completed first draft novel of at least 30,000 words plus other work
If you finish the book you choose for the 40,000 word challenge and you are short of the 40k words, you can work on something else as well -- but at least 30,000 words of it has to be on the first novel and you will still have to write as many words as you need to reach the 40,000 word mark.

  • You can change levels during the Madness if you find you are doing better or worse than expected.

Are you ready for the challenge? Sign up now, and we'll see how many of us are really crazy this year!

Are we supposed to sign up?

Okay - I'll do it this year. I'm playing with a possible anthology of connected shorts based on Canterbury Tales set in epic Fantasy.

    1,000 words a day

    It's all I can manage.

I'm in going for the 3rd level 3000 words a day for a week. If I change my mind and find I can do more, I might just try the fourth level. We'll see what happens but for now I'm sticking to 3000 words a day. As I write this I have exactly about thirty minutes before I can start writing.

    90605, totals for March 27th and 28th
Posted by Suelder, Wed Mar-28-12 09:09 PM
So, for the 27th, I had 987 words - close enough to 1,000 that I'll definitely make it up.

And for the 28th, I've got 1,030 words. See, I've made it up already :D

I have a better Idea of who's in the inn and what their stories could be. I've written some framing scenes and some of the set up of one ghost story, so far.

    90625, Day Three
Posted by Suelder, Thu Mar-29-12 09:35 PM
Okay, have done another 1,260 new words.

As usually, I've written part of the ending. This helps me by giving me ideas and something to move toward.

90638, Day four and a snip
Posted by Suelder, Fri Mar-30-12 09:03 PM
I'm beat and only got 357 words today. But I'll make it up over the weekend.

    And here's the promised snip:

Deep in the forest, there's a dark place. The trees shield it from the world and the mountain has carved a hollow to hold it. It waits.

Posted by Suelder, Mon Apr-02-12 09:49 PM
Well, I made a valiant push on the seventh day and got 2,000 new words.

But that only nets me 5,734 words for March Madness.

Still, it's not a bad jumpstart for my ghost stories.

    Happy April,

This should be a good way to get me back into the swing of things now that we're no longer spending all day every day getting the house ready to market. I'm going to say 2000 words per day, but I'll be happy if I just get something every day.

I'll be working on either the bad fairies novella, or Michael.
    90654, 500 words. Total.
Posted by bonniers, Sun Apr-01-12 11:04 AM
I have accomplished my subgoal: I did get at least a few words every day. It's harder than I thought to get back into the routine...
90667, final: around a thousand words
Posted by bonniers, Tue Apr-03-12 09:10 AM
I got 250 words on Sunday and Monday, for a total of around a thousand.

Which is way better than nothing.

I am going to try for 3k a day, but this is really a crazed week for me with everything due before April 1. We'll see how I do, and if I get newsletter, Vision, FM updates and all the rest of the stuff done as well!

    90597, Day 1: 10,090
Posted by zette, Tue Mar-27-12 11:26 PM
I started with 51,023 on the Water/Stone/Light novel. I am now up to 61,100.

I really don't see how I can keep doing days like this, but it was fun to just run with the novel today.
    90602, RE: Day 1: 10,090
Posted by Dreamerscove, Wed Mar-28-12 01:17 AM
Go Zette! That's a great kick-butt day full of words!
    90608, Day 2: 10,120
Posted by zette, Wed Mar-28-12 11:49 PM
The novel is now up to 71220 words. I did not expect a second 10k day and no, I don't think I'll be doing any more. I did get quite a bit of other work done, too, though. So I'm happy with the results. It's fun to be able to fly with a story again. I haven't done this in a long time.
    90610, RE: Day 2: 10,120
Posted by Fabricia, Thu Mar-29-12 01:31 AM
Wow - so impressed with & inspired by your flying with the story. Congratulations!
    90622, RE: Day 2: 10,120
Posted by Dreamerscove, Thu Mar-29-12 03:36 AM
Congrats on another 10k day! I wish I could get a few of them in. Your wordcount is really flying now.
    90627, Day 3: 7,231
Posted by zette, Thu Mar-29-12 11:40 PM
Water/Stone/Light is now up to 78451 and I am running out of outline. I'm writing a few notes for the last chapters of the book, which I hadn't expected I would need quite this soon. I've written over 27k in the last three days.

Tomorrow I must do other work , though, so I will be slowing down a bit for the next couple days. Actually, if I get all the way through Water/Stone/Light I might not have anything ready to work on, at least at this sort of speed!

    90639, Day 4: 4587
Posted by zette, Sat Mar-31-12 12:31 AM
Work took a lot of time, massive headache slowed me down, along with general annoyances with stuff.

But still, not a bad count. I might still get the rest of this first draft completed by the end of the challenge.
    90648, Day 5: 2533
Posted by zette, Sun Apr-01-12 12:20 AM
Plus another 2k on Vision material.

Back is out. Miserable. Going to bed early and doing the rest of the Vision work in the morning, if I can move at all.
    90651, RE: Day 5: 2533
Posted by Dreamerscove, Sun Apr-01-12 01:42 AM
I hope you feel better in the morning. It's been a tough few days.

    :hugs:
    90658, Day 6: 2110
Posted by zette, Sun Apr-01-12 11:09 PM
A really annoying day with Vision site problems, but got a bit of writing done and calling it good for the night. Back is still horrible. Just can't sit through any more tonight.
    90662, Day 7: 5159 and 41,830 total
Posted by zette, Tue Apr-03-12 12:03 AM
That averages very close to 6k a day (5976), so I did really well, even with the days that were not so good. Plus I put out a new issue of Vision, a newsletter for DAZ and FM and DAZ site work done. A nicely productive week!

Water/Stone/Light is now over 90k and heading towards The End

    90664, RE: Day 7: 5159 and 41,830 total

Posted by Dreamerscove, Mon Mar-26-12 11:52 PM
I'm in! I'm even going to be a little nuts, since I'm desperate to finish a first draft before I move. So, going for #6 and the 40,000 words, hoping it gets me to the end of this novel.
    90601, Day 1 - 5248 Words
Posted by Dreamerscove, Wed Mar-28-12 01:16 AM
Off to a pretty good start, I think. On the plus side, this surge took me into an exciting part in the book that answers a lot of questions in the series. I'm excited to write it!
    90613, RE: Day 1 - 5248 Words
Posted by Fabricia, Thu Mar-29-12 01:42 AM
What a great incentive to boost wordcount before moving. Well done and hooray for getting into terrain of exciting writing!
    90620, Day 2 - 7381 Words
Posted by Dreamerscove, Thu Mar-29-12 03:33 AM
Did better today than yesterday. Feeling a little better from having been sick certainly helped, as did getting a little more time alone. Reached the half-way point of the novel AND stopped right before an action scene. Which his great, since it means I can launch myself into writing tomorrow morning! Yay!
    90630, Day 3 - 5471 Words
Posted by Dreamerscove, Fri Mar-30-12 12:34 AM
Made it despite a bad day! Ended up having to take a good walk to figure out a plot problem. The idea in the outline just wasn't quite right. But, problem figured out and I'm now well past writing the solution!
    90640, Day 4 - 4047 Words
Posted by Dreamerscove, Sat Mar-31-12 02:18 AM
Today was a really hard day for writing. Still, I did manage to get through several tough parts where I had to rethink points in the outline.

Still had a hard day, starting with sleeping 12 hours, but still made it. Whew.
    90659, Day 6 - 5009 Words

    90663, Day 7 - 7892 for a total of 40093
Posted by Dreamerscove, Tue Apr-03-12 12:22 AM
40093 words in the end, and that's only because of a good last day. Barely made it, but I DID make it! Whee!

Even better, the novel is within 10 scenes of being finished. So, please excuse me, but it's time to get back to the writing!

I have a short story I want to finish for a market opening in April, so maybe this will be the fire under my butt.

I've got ~1k on it already and don't want it to run much over 7k, so it'll probably be more like six days' worth on one story and one day worth on another.

    ETA: Official start count: 1170
